Case Study:

A medical center in suburban Pittsburgh embarked on a

two-year, $17.5-million construction project to add eight modern

operating room (OR) suites. The ORs feature a state-of-the-art

integrated OR video system, which greatly enhances the surgical

teams’ capabilities, especially in the areas of laparoscopic,

vascular, and cardiothoracic surgery. The video system was

a custom collaboration between the team leader of clinical

engineering at the medical center and Black Box.

”I looked at turnkey solutions, but they were cost-

prohibitive — in the range of $50,000–$100,000 per OR,”

he explained. ”To design a system myself, I knew I needed

a technology partner, so I called Black Box.”

A Black Box team met with the medical center’s engineering

team to discuss the system. The medical center wanted a

technologically uniﬁ ed system that integrated advanced surgical

and medical equipment with a streamlined, high-resolution

digital video system. They also wanted a fast, easy-to-use system

and a way to get the cables off the OR ﬂ oor.

Armed with this list, the Black Box team went to work. The

lead Black Box engineer designed a solution based on a DVI

Matrix Switch (page 51) and ServSwitch

™

Wizard SRX DVI-D

Plus USB Extender units (see blackbox.eu). To ensure

compatibility and workability in the OR, the lead engineer

performed extensive testing in a simulated environment.

Then the lead engineer turned to the problem of how to make

the system intuitive and fast, as surgeons would call out what

display they wanted and the nurses had to respond immediately.

The solution was custom software for a simple touchscreen

operation. To switch between monitors and equipment, all the

nurse has to do is touch the screen.

To solve the problem of getting the tangle of cables off the

OR ﬂ oor, Black Box bundled CATx cables and shipped them

to the medical boom arm manufacturer for pre-installation.

The clinical engineering team leader at the medical center

estimates that the Black Box system saved him $40,000 per OR.

”I looked at other systems,” he explained. ”I knew Black Box had

video equipment and together we could ﬁ gure out how to do this

more cost effectively. And we did.”
