8.14 Overriding the Settings of a CPU-Interface Card’s DIP Switches
In addition to their physical DIP switch (see Section 4.2), the CPU-Interface Cards support a “virtual DIP
switch” that you can set with keyboard commands in order to override the physical DIP switch’s settings. (This
can be very convenient if the CPU-Interface Card in question is far away or otherwise hard to get at.) Any
changes to the virtual switch will remain in effect until you either change it again or you move the positions of
the physical DIP switch. (Whenever changes are made to the physical DIP switch, the virtual switch resets itself
to match the physical-switch settings.)
To override all of the DIP-switch positions at once, take these steps:
1. Referring to Section 4.2, determine how you want to set each DIP-switch position. Going left to right from
position 8 to position 1, write down a “1” for each position you want to be ON and a “0” for each position
you want to be OFF. When you finish, you should have an eight-digit binary code that corresponds to your
desired switch-position settings. (Positions 8, 7, and 6 are reserved for future use and should always be
OFF, so the first three digits of the code should be “0 0 0”.)
2. Convert the binary code you derived in step 1 into a decimal number (you can refer to Table C-1 in
Appendix C).
3. Select the computer channel whose physical DIP-switch settings you want to override.
4. Send the <CM>SW+[Enter] command to enable the override of the physical DIP switches on all of the
system’s CPU-Interface Cards.
5. Send the <CM>SW=x[Enter] command, where x is the decimal number you derived in step 2.
To override one DIP-switch position at a time, take these steps:
1. Referring to Section 5.2, determine how you want to set the DIP-switch position. Write down a “1” if you
want it to be ON or a “0” if you want it to be OFF.
2. Select the computer channel whose physical DIP-switch settings you want to override.
3. Send the <CM>SW+[Enter] command to enable the override of the physical DIP switches on the system’s
CPU-Interface Cards.
4. Send the <CM>SWn=b[Enter] command, where n is the switch-position number and b is either 1 (if you
want to turn the position ON) or 0 (if you want to turn the position OFF). For example, send
<CM>SW4=1[Enter]” if you want to force a 10-second keyboard/mouse-inactivity timeout on that
channel.
To disable the use of virtual switches to override the physical DIP switches, send the <CM>SW–[Enter]
command.
